ICON5 and Xerox

I will be at the press release conference for ICON5 on Wednesday July 2nd 5:30PM for the release of the Xerox card deck. My school got to design the "Hearts" suit. I got to design the king of hearts, if you haven't seen what it looks like it is a few posts down.

So I am hoping that I will get a copy of the deck. I'll be taking pictures and they will be posted here afterwards! AWESOME!

lately i have been trying to figure out exactly what kind of projects i can come up with to:

a. make money
b. keep myself busy
c. develop my portfolio and expand my work

while working part time at a children's furniture store in dumbo (which is an awesome job and i love all the people i work with even though it eats up my weekends) haha thats life!

so two projects aside from my digital work that i last posted which i am still working on at the moment are filling a moleskine book of ephemeral drawings in only black and purple sharpie markers and a children's book. hopefully i can scan and resell these items on lulu.com when they are finished. i want to create work that is easy to sell like little books, stationary, maybe t-shirts and flash. hopefully i can try and get some kind of small business off the ground until i find a stable 9-5 crappy job in a design firm or somehow dive into the realm of tattoo artistry which will take probably another 2 years of apprenticing in a very male dominated industry.

just gotta keep on with keeping on. it is still only the summer and once the fall and my toy is released i can get myself off the ground after september rolls around.

by the way, amy winehouse has been my new guilty pleasure/music obsession as of lately even though she is a totally the worst role model on the face of the earth.

it sure has been a while since i last updated. things i have been up to/things to come:

1. went to japan for 10 days which was life-changing
2. got a part-time job
3. my mimobot should be released at comicon san diego in august
4. starting to design a window display for mac cosmetics for a competition
5. trying to create new work for possible gallery stuff
6. graduated!

so there are things beginning to happen. hopefully it will all take place by the end of summer or sooner.

after a very unfortunate day that consisted of the awkwardness, sheer horror, and lack of illustration job offerings at the career fair at parsons combined with spilling a huge hot cup of coffee all over myself in public, i am amazed that i haven't given up on illustration all together! however, everyone has a love hate relationship with their first love. i suppose you just can't rely on big agencies when you are in the field of illustration...i am sure this is me being very premature in my views. and my life as a struggling artists stops when?

anyhow, aside from the atrocities of the day i am still inspired by some up-and-coming projects personal and school-related.

3. website being revamped again for the 1 millionth time!

i am so annoyed because i wanted to play sims 2 tonight and i just realized that it is in the studio with my big box of nerdy computer equipment. i guess the rest of the night will consist of TAPS on the scifi channel and/or possibly snood. wow i am really exciting haha.

To be a successful artist, it does not matter how many gallery shows you have, how much money you make, who your fans are. What matters is dignity, modesty, and being able to form a community with fellow artist and build strong bonds with your peers. I witnessed today something that blew my mind. I from now on will never endorse livejournal.com to ever grace my presence with ever again. These are the reasons...

1. Artist communites are for networking and building friends...today my art was completely trashed for no reason by ignorant and shallow people. I am all for criticism if it is constructive, but to say *you suck*, *you should have never posted such garbage here*, *you can't draw*, *your work makes me forget how to speak english* is over the top. I don't even know these people. I didn't even provoke them to say such garbage.

2. I don't think my art is perfect. In fact every piece I do is a work in progress and to say that would be false and arrogant. To say I can't draw really interests me because if I can't draw then what exactly am I posting? What exactly am I doing wrong? I don't expect everyone to love my art...in fact I expect people to hate it too. Its anyones opinion.

3. I could say that I don't care what people say, but of course the sheer rudeness and anger upsets me to an extent. It upsets me that people can be so hurtful over the internet and treat you as if you aren't an actual human being. To randomly lash out at my art is immature and destructive to yourself and the community you reside in.

4. Good luck networking with other artists in the future. I will be sure to give all of you people that have such a random chip on your shoulder a good recommendation for a magazine or client.

I just had to rant about that and warn other artists that believe in their work to not post anything on livejournal. It will just ruin your day. I am lucky to know many amazing people who are extremely talented and helpful to those around them within their field...I hope that these negative energies find other ways to make themselves feel better than to lash out at peoples artwork so randomly.

Spring Break!

Spring Break is almost here! However, it really won't be much of a break because I have some major assignments lined up and due when I return to the daily grind.

Things I would like to accomplish over the break (non-school related):
1. Get my new *city* bike that Greg gave me repaired so I can use it around Brooklyn to make errands quicker and get some exercise.
2. Sell my Xbox360 on craigslist or ebay plus Guitar Hero 3 and Bioshock (any one interested let me know!) for some some well needed cash.
3. Relax for 3 days
4. Celebrate St. Patrick*s Day
5. Cook

Things to accomplish that are school related (BOOO!):
1. Start my Anti-Celebrity Worship campaign for class on Monday
2. Work on my next project for portfolio which is to illustrate Earth,Wind,Fire, and Water as seperate images. (so excited about this project!)
3. Get a Job? Or Jobs? HELP!

I am so excited about everything I have recently ordered from dick blick and I hope it comes in the mail soon:

1. 3 wood panels (to start for a series of 10) in multiple sizes

2. lasceaux designer acrylics in many many beautiful shades of purples and crimsons

3. some mixing containers to keep my custom blends all organized

If you don't know about lasceaux paints....they have the most insane hues on earth and the colors are to die for.

This series is going to be about personal events going on in my life right now these past two months...not painted in a literal sense but represented in symbols and images and colors...I won't go deeply into what exact events these paintings will represent...I want to convey my hopes, my fears, memories, and predictions...I am just hoping that I will feel humbled by painting completely by emotion which is something I haven't tried to do with my work yet.

I Want to Paint....Again

After a whole entire year of staring at my small a** computer screen, I believe I am completely ready to paint again.

After class tomorrow I am going to Dick Blick and getting Lascaux pigments and some birchwood so I am inspired to paint. I am just going to crack out 10 paintings these next couple weeks of whatever strikes my fancy. After I am finished I am going to try and submit the series to Giant Robot or any other indie galleries around town and see what happens. It would be great to have a real gallery opening of only my stuff.

I am thinking vaudeville girls with tattoos from the twenties, random animals, taxidermy and other curiosities.

I also have my celebrity posters to work on which are only going to be 4 pantone colors each so they can be cheaper to reproduced than my 20 pantone color thesis ones.

I just want to completely dive into my own little world and forget about eveything else for a while and just ride out whats going on. I am hoping that this storm will come to an end with a lot of inspiration and success. I will absolutely have more time to myself to just completely be submerged into my art which I really believe is what I need right now in order to launch my career as an artist and illustrator.

Bond No. 9 and SIGG Competitions

School is already going into the final stretch! Therefore, I have two interesting projects to dive into.

The first one is to design Bond No.9's new Astor Place fragrance bottle. I know exactly what I am doing but I am not going to disclose any information on it at this time because I really want my idea to be unique, and I don't want anyone else to take off on it.

The second project is to design a water bottle design for this company called SIGG. They specialize in these aluminum eco friendly water bottles. They want it to represent something American or New York. I decided to do a spin on the design of the Chrystler building and make it super modern. Whenever I think of America, I think of New York because it embodies every type of culture that resides within our country.

So, we'll see if I can do as well with these two competitions like I did with the Mimobot one. I really think I can put as much excitement into these two projects as humanly possible. And hopefully make them intelligent and successful designs.

Over The Edge...

Celebrity Series

I have a new personal series comming up soon called *The Hollywood Effect* which will be a series of posters featuring my "favorite" celebrity train-wrecks/anti-role models/trashy a**holes. Here is the first blossomings of a statement:

"Hollywood is a definition for dissillusion. In the past hollywood starlettes used to be considered glamorous role models and heros for a depressed society. Now, celebrities represent our current accepence of ignorance and tastelessnes. We worship these women, we love their social lives, we want to be rich like them, we are obsessed with them. However, these stars are a reflection of the decline in moral and social values in society today. We let our children consume their perfumes and products, we allow our children to aspire to them, we allow ourselves to treat them like talented rock stars. The truth is that our society is so numb to the media that we have no idea how absolutely revolting these people really are. Because they are celebrities we allow them to influence us. Should we let them get away with it?"

Does this make sense?

I need to refine it but my idea is to create a series of rock style posters to show them glorified but really go all out on the disgusting traits of these celebrities I chose. I want these posters to be an anthem to the death of moral values in celebrity/media culture/role models. Maybe even these stars to take notice of them because I am going to try and make them as viral as possible. I really want these to be a message to people.

My vision for this is huge. I just hope I don't get distracted.

Still on a Break...

I am still on a break until Janury 22nd. I haven't been creating that much new artwork. Things aren't finished in my new studio yet.

The days have consisted of:

-Guitar Hero III for a billion hours on *hard* because I am a huge nerd and I am already sick of Bioshock
-Working out at the gym excessivly
-Selling old crap on EbAY for $$$$$ because I am a starving art person
-Taking Bandit for long horrible walks in the freezing cold
-Trying not to think too much
-Drinking lots of coffee for no reason because I don't really need to be awake

Anyhow, as 2008 rolls on in a have 2 big events to look foward to, well 3:

1. TRIP TO JAPAN! (this is the most exciting thing ever!)
2. Graudating...
3. Being 22 years old and toasting to my existence

So I'll send you my regards while I am sipping Sake and wearing a Hello Kitty hat with a bunch of Japanese school girls in Tokyo...meanwhile blasting all my hard earned cash in a Kawaii shopping spree!!!

NEW and Improved Thesis Pieces

Betty Broadbent Illustrations

So here are 3 drawings for my Drawing & Mixed Media class for my biography project. These are in progress so they appear to be slightly unfinished. I did the tattoo drawings in watercolor then scanned them. I then cut them out in photoshop and placed them over the images to create the feeling of Betty being tattooed. It was interesting trying to create a aesthetic difference between the tattoo drawings and the drawings of Betty. So here they are:

So for my drawing and mixed media class we had to do an illustrated biography of a person/thing. I chose to do a series of illustrations about Betty Broadbent who was one of the first women tattoo artists. She was also a sideshow act because her whole body was covered in tattoos. This is one of my in progress line drawings of Betty at the circus with a horse. There aren't any tattoos on her body yet because I am still trying to figure out how to work them into the images.

Illustration Fridays

I am going to start submitting illustrations to Illustration Friday. It is a website that has a theme every friday and people illustrate the theme. Hopefully this will become a good way to get myself out there. Right now I have been busy finishing up my thesis pieces and I am proude to say I have minimal left to do. However, in mty other classes I need to do a substancial amount of work like finishing up my final toy and my 10 page biography for my mixed media class.

Aside from that, life has been rather chaotic and big changes might happen soon that I am not exactly excited or happy about but I will get through it. So I don't leave this post empty, I will post one initial line drawing from my 6th thesis piece about obsessions with food and drink.

Here it is. My fifth thesis piece. It is about sexual addiction. This one was so hard to come up with but everyone said I did an awesome job. This one may be one of my favorites!

The next one is going to be about food. I have NO idea what the hell I am doing for it.

I am really bored and frustrated right now. I have promo stuff to do and I have been neglecting it for some reason. I can't decide what to do with the business cards, stationary, letterhead, postcards etc. I want to make buttons too eventually.

Bandit won't get off my lap for anything. He is like a hot water bottle.

My whole night has been pretty sad. Geographies of Hope & Despair homework or shall I say bitchwork...A Shot at Love with Tila Taquilla...3 hours of the History channel. I think I may go crazy now. My whole life these days consists of bright flat screens.

1 more week until turkey day. I am counting...

I might go to bed. I am just too cranky to deal with anything more tonight.

Thesis #4

Ebay and its wonders...

So I was scrounging around ebay tonight looking for refrence photographs of women from the 1920s. I found this AMAZING 95 year old scrap book up for bid there which had old clippings from articles and magazines of silent film actresses. Of course I had to bid on it! So don't be surprised if you see me walking around with a 95 yr old scrap book for inspiration.

Anyhow, I emailed my teacher about this Baseman issue. I am not sure if I am going to be able to take it very far considering the man's status. I just think the important lesson learned here is this:

1. Myspace is dangerous. Be aware that posting artwork means people can steal and idea.
2. Apparently well experienced illustrators aren't creative enough to come up with their own concepts or ideas and have to stoop so low to rip of an art students project.
3. Stealing concepts is a strange form of flattery.
4. I should email him and thank him for taking an interest in my work and doing a series based off of it...

More thesis ramblings...

So my teacher actually ended up seeing some issues with my 3rd thesis piece. Which I actually didn't agree with. He said that my piece is too "dated" looking and that I need to make it more modern by putting some kind of computery or electronic device someplace in there. Where I see where he is comming from with this, I feel like any kind of those devices will totally kill the aesthetic of the piece. Someone in class also said she looks too content or happy with what she is doing. Maybe I am bias because in my mind I wanted to create a melloncholy woman figure kind of sad and depressed about working so much. I didn't think she looks exactly like she is "smiling" or content....but overall besides all these things people loved it which is mainly all I actually care about so whatever.

As stated before, my plastic surgery piece isn't posted because of color issues I am getting wrapped up in, but when that one is posted you can kind of make a comparison about why people were kind of confused about my third piece.

I guess people expected me to put some crazy spin on it with some bloodshot eyes and skulls (this is apparently modern to some people?) but I felt that I need to start staying away from some of that so people can take my work more seriously and don't think I make things the way I do for shock value. I guess this is the calm contemplative poster between all the sick ass nasty stomach churning ones....

Anyways, I am hoping that tomorrow my next sketches will be approved so I can begin my piece about people with gambling addictions, which will be posted on Thursday like always. I am totally going to contradict this statement with my next piece.

For this one, I am doing a slot machine with strange things pouring out of the bottom. Kind of a jackpot of disgusting crap, like dead rats and rotting apples and garbage instead of money/tokens. I am going to do this one as a retro kind of casino themed insane load of digusting crap. Maybe then, everyone will appreciate it.

As opposed to the last post and on an extreme lighter note, today I spent some free time remembering the animations I used to be obsessed with in the past. Not only do they have most of the clips of them on YouTube BUT, the subject matter in some of these cartoons were kind of dark and depressing. You would think movies about Unicorns and magical things would be uplifting but some of them are actually quite scary. I am questioning whether or not my parents actually realized this or not. Entitled to a Break

So I am taking a small break from my second thesis piece which is almost finished. I'll probably end up posting it tomorrow because I am starting to get dry eyes from staring at my computer for so long. Let me say, I am in love with my WACOM tablet. It does wonders with shading and so does my Pantone color selector kit. So far I found a company that can make editions of my files for the show in the springtime. So I will have these HUGE screenprints of my work hanging up. All 16x24. I would say that is a pretty decent size. Any larger than that would kill my wallet.

Anyhow, school has been pretty non-stressful and actually enjoyable for once. Last year I feel like I had way more assignments. I am so happy I have the free time to actually delve into my most important work which is my thesis.

2 down, 5 to go! My goal is to finish 1 per week. Next week I am going to send a finished one out to get editions done to test and see how it will end up looking.

Sorry, I Have Been So Busy...

So this school year so far has been so busy! Lots of projects and lots of stuff to be taken care of. I'll be posting more often as projects begin to become finished. What I can post though, is a finished side project for my senior thesis class. We had to illustrate a guilty pleasure. Mine? Xbox 360. I can't stop playing it and I feel like a huge nerd because it sucks the time of my day out from under me.

The color is slightly off. I will soon either get my screen calibrated or buy pantone color charts to help me out better.

More posts to come as I have two more finished Mimobots from my toy design class and my first finished thesis piece. (My thesis has changed so disregard the first couple sketches from my last post).

I have been up all night since yesterday at 11 AM. What is wrong with me? I am NEVER having coffee from Aroma again. My hands having been shakey and my stomach has been in knots for hours. It is now almost 7am and I have school in 2 hours. This is when I start to realize I have a sleeping disorder or I need to really shake my caffine addiction.

So I found out that my toy design will be released in early 2008. So keep an eye out for it.

This blog should start to become filled with images in the next 2-3 weeks so that should make this more interesting for people who just want to look and not bother reading any text.

Senior Thesis

I have my senior thesis squared away and ready to begin the final touches on it for the first two panels. Just need to figure out the color and do the final compiling on photoshop with layers etc. Each box will be scanned seperately so I can make them really big and focus on the detail when I draw. Everything is sketches out and squared away.

Main inspiration for the strip section of the thesis is Winsor McCay and Chris Ware. Lots of type. The strips will be tricky when I end up printing them.....For the large illustrations, I am just focusing on how I like to create a general image.

I need to go to New York Central Art Supplies to get some really really good quality paper to print on, but that won't be anything to worry about until I print which won't be until the last 5 weeks of the semester (November-December). BFK BFK BFK.

I have a feeling I might have up to 20 pieces + for the show, depending on if I get any of them into it. (wishful thinking). This is me being super ambitious. My life depends on this. I am so ready to kick major ass. Get ready for Podd art times 50. *waves fists*

Plugless

Well scratch that last post. My G4 laptop's plug broke and my computer has been inoperable for the past week therefore the poster deadline has pasted and it was never made. Its not a super big deal but I still kind of irritated about the whole situation. I just spent 80 bucks on a new plug so now everything should be okay. At the moment I am updating from a different computer.

My senior thesis is squared away. I am now ready to have a really long and stressful first semester of screen prints and hectic activity. My sketchbook is still not completed but, now since I have a complete thesis I will just fill it with sketches from each panel and comic page.

I am serious about the state of our environment so this thesis will kind of be a personal and creative view on that.

Pandora

So here is the outline of the main character of my design for Pandora poster. The concept that I cam up with is "music from our heart to the world" , hence the heart shaped guitar. The poster will be a gift given to people who make donations to their 3 campaigns that help less fourtunate children be able to experience a music program in their school. The final image will have a background with the view of planet earth and notes as stars. The Pandora logo will also be included in the final image.

As the summer has been winding down, I have been thrown in the face with upcomming assinments and projects. My "to do" list is about a mile long. I have been hopping trains between Brooklyn and Manhattan for the whole month since my family's relocation there.

The first part of my "to do" list includes a poster for a music analysis company called Pandora. I will post finished linework of the poster by Monday night. The colorization will be complete by the end of the week and thats when the final will be posted for your viewing pleasure.

The second part of my list is to do something related to Franz Kafka's "Metamorphasis". Lots and lots of bugs and odd things will be part of that project.

There are many more things left to do....I don't exactly want to think about everything right now. Number one priority is this poster and taking everything one step at a time.

Something that has been inspiring to me and keeping my chin up is Pete Fowler's work. If you don't know him, check out his website, toys, and music (I own a few of his little creatures):

Mimobot/Vimobot

I assume many of you know about my great summer achievement which was being voted top 3 of the best designs for Mimoco. So, the three winners will have their designs produced into actual toys/USB drives (to either stick into your computer for extra storage or collect some dust on your desktop). Just in case you don't know what exactly the heck Mimoco is well, it is a fantastic little company based out of Boston that creates cute little USB characters and vinyl toys. They have been featured in various magazines like the current issue of Bust. Heres a link to their Myspace and website for furter info:

My design was on display at Comicon San Diego about a week ago along with the other 2 winning designs. Heres the promo:

So this little guy will be hitting the shevles as well with the other two after the second half of the contest (there will be 3 more winners announced)! Stay tuned for updates about when and where you can buy one, I am pretty sure that Kid Robot, Toy Tokyo, and the MoMa Design store will carry them first.
